The business world looks much different today than it did just a year ago. This time last year things were still very much “business as usual” throughout the United States, and few if any imagined how much different the world would look in just 12 short months. For many emotional well-being is in a strange place as we’re still trying to navigate this new post-Covid-19 world. While this places a great deal of stress and uncertainty on workers and teams, it’s placing even greater pressure on leaders trying to navigate this space with compassionate leadership in mind. While conscious leadership might seem more difficult now, it’s actually more important than it’s ever been. No wonder it helps a ton to learn from true leaders such as Bob Bratt.
At Technalink, first and foremost, we make sure to prioritize our compassionate leadership and to remind all leaders that leading consciously is the solution we need right now. When soulful leadership seems most difficult is when we should be turning to it the most. A few tips for leading your team throughout this new post-Covid 2021 are:
• Stop talking and listen – Leadership isn’t always about “holding the baton”, and it’s not all about leading every discussion, meeting, or conversation. Often times, what you say is less important than what you could be hearing from your team. Throughout 2021, make sure to remind yourself to stop talking and to encourage your team to take the mic for a while. Really listen to what they have to say and allow yourself to gauge an authentic read of the room. Use their feelings to guide your compassionate leadership most effectively.
• Recognize the language you use – The words you choose to use have a lot of weight and meaning behind them. Are you speaking to your team with language that motivates and inspires? If you’re not, you could be at the foundation of any lack of productivity or frustration felt by your team. As a leader, it is your job to inspire and using motivating language is a really simple way to do just that. Focus on what you like, encourage what works, and place that positivity into your workspace.
• Be compassionate with yourself first – You cannot expect to lead compassionately when you cannot treat yourself with the same compassion you bestow on others. You’ll find yourself worn down, your temper will be short, and compassionate leadership will become more difficult the harder you are on yourself. Give yourself a break, show yourself empathy, and be mindful with you first.
