This is a decision that will mean that you, your business, your choices and the people you surround yourself will often be forced to make choices that may take longer, or be more costly, or simply be more ethical, empathetic, and compassionate, than a quicker, easier, less moral decision.
This is, in some ways the great challenge of soulful leadership. Running a business that is successful and profitable has many different choices and actions that can be undertaken to achieve this. Not all of those choices and actions may be honest, but they may still yield results. So why choose soulful leadership, rather than something more mercenary? If one is easier, why not simply go with that?
The Cost Of Unethical Leadership
There’s a cynical observation in both celebrity and business sectors that some people seem destined to “fail upwards.” It means that even though a person may lie, treat others poorly, betray them, or engage in standards and practices that seem harmful to a great many people, they get rewarded for it, enjoying promotions, prestige and even wealth. While it’s sad to admit, it’s also a realistic admission that for some people this is the case. Harvey Weinstein is a terrifying example, having run a Hollywood production company that abused countless women over the years.
But this type of leadership, while it may get results, is also doomed to numerous negative effects over a long enough timeline. In the same way that a sickness like cancer eventually consumes itself and everything around it, the same is true of unethical leadership. What may seem faster, such as lying about certain results, cutting corners on a project and pocketing the money, or even simply orchestrating the betrayal of a rival or competitor eventually comes back to haunt the person that commits these acts.
Everyone Is Accountable
A person who garners a reputation for deception, betrayal, cruelty, callousness or other aggressive, negative leadership styles is a person who is essentially alone. This is a leader that is surrounded by people motivated largely by greed, fear and ambition, and that inevitably results in problems as these people learn by the unethical example of the one that leads them.
Choosing soulful leadership may often be a difficult thing to do, especially if the temptation is there to succeed by being unethical, or by being hateful instead of compassionate. But the cost to you, as a person, and a leader, and the cost to your business, and the people who carefully watch how you act, and take their cues from your approach to business, will be profound. Soulful leadership doesn’t just make you an ethical business executive, it makes you a better person. And that has widespread ramifications for every aspect of your life.
