Everyone can learn how to meditate. We are here with some tips on how to meditate and offer some helpful tips on how to go into a deeper state of meditation.
1. Sit Upright and Get Comfortable
If you try to meditate while laying down, the chances are you will fall asleep. Instead of laying down, find a comfortable spot to sit in with your back straight. You can find a comfy chair or sit cross-legged on a meditation cushion or pillow.
2. Breathe Deeply
Our breath is our anchor to the present and is one of our most powerful tools when meditating. Take 10 deep breaths and count to five during each breath, exhaling and inhaling. You want your lungs to fill with air on each inhale. You will then slowly exhale through your nose. During the exhale, your shoulders should drop. Repeat your breathing exercises.
3. Close Your Eyes
Closing your eyes is a good way to remain focused on what you are doing. When your eyes are open, you are giving them the chance to wander, leading us to thoughts we don’t want to focus on when meditating like the pile of laundry in the corner you know you have to get done.
4. Scan Your Body
As you meditate, check-in with your body. This will also help bring you into the present moment. Focus on your feet and then move to the top of your head. If there is any tension, send your breath in that direction.
5. Be Aware of Thoughts
Many of us overthink. Meditation is a chance to take notice of these thoughts, so we don’t get consumed by them. Notice the thoughts that are more present. Allow yourself to have each thought, and then let it pass without attaching yourself to it.
6. Open Your Eyes
When you are ready, open your eyes. Beginners should start meditation for about five to ten minutes. The best time for meditation is in the morning before you have your coffee. Meditating and connecting to your breath and thoughts is a good way to set the overall tone for the day.
More Helpful Tips on How to Meditate
Stone beads can also be used in combination with meditation. Rolling the beads between your fingers as you meditate provides you with a physical reminder of your intention and helps you return to your breathing and refocus your attention when your mind begins to wander. Mala beads are a tool to help guide you as you achieve deeper meditation practice.
