Honesty is an integral part of conscious leadership, and this includes honesty regarding oneself. In a leadership position, you’ve likely made assessments of employees and partners, but how often have you assessed yourself? Making an honest self-evaluation is one of the most challenging things a leader can do, but it’s imperative to their continued growth in leadership as a whole. For the compassionate leader, one must be able to be honest and communicate with themselves before they expect that same behavior from their team members.
At Technalink, we encourage our team members and leaders to self-assess regularly, look within using their own mirror of authenticity, and observe what they find. You don’t need to fight any findings you don’t like, and you don’t need to feel any particular way about them. Simply observe them, think about them, and use what you’ve learned to continue your progression going forward.
Meditation is the perfect opportunity for making self-assessments. As you’re meditating for clarity or understanding, allow feelings to come to you and observe what goes through your body and your mind. While keeping a mindful state, observe those feelings and thoughts from an outsider’s perspective. What you find is a picture of your true self, and one that you can assess in the moment or once the meditation session is through.
As you make self-assessments, remember what you observed and experienced by keeping a journal of what you’ve learned about your authentic self. This journal is something you can refer to on your conscious leadership journey, and it’s something you can use to track your own progress going forward. When you can see the progress you’ve made, you’ll be more motivated to continue those self-assessments
While self-assessments can be a challenge, they’re well worth undertaking. The more familiar you become with the process of authentic self-assessment, the easier it becomes, and the more you look forward to the progress you’ll make when it comes to conscious leadership.
