There are a lot of things that will influence a company’s overall success, but at Technalink we’ve seen time and time again that good, effective leadership is one of the secrets to true success. But what makes a great leader? There are a lot of different factors here as well, but one thing that deserves attention is your level of compassion.
A compassionate leader is able to not only inspire their employees to greater things, but also is able to forge a bond with their employees that can translate to improved morale, lower turnover rates, better attendance, and much more. However, for many people, it’s not always easy to know whether or not you’re truly compassionate and using compassionate leadership within your daily routine.
As such, we think it’s well worth doing a short self-assessment to determine whether or not you’re a compassionate leader. A few simple questions can give you a clearer idea of whether or not this is the case. Remember, however, that you need to answer these questions honestly, taking a hard look at yourself and determining what you truly contribute to your business and what kind of leader you are.
With that in mind, here are some of the main things to ask yourself.
- Are You Approachable? – Do employees come up to talk to you, or do they seem to shy away from you as you walk by? Do you always make it a point to speak to them, and treat them nicely? If you notice that employees don’t really seem to approach you with confidence, you may be putting off the wrong vibe.
- Do You Know When To Bend Rules? – For example, an employee attendance policy may call for employees to be reprimanded when they call out suddenly. But what if a sudden emergency occurs? A good, compassionate leader uses their best judgment to show employees that rules aren’t as important as caring about those in the workplace.
- Are You Honest? – Compassion translates into being open and honest about your own capabilities as well as those of others. You should be able to admit your own mistakes and shortcomings – and do so openly. If your employees view you as honest, it will help them realize that you are also compassionate.
- Do You Help When Needed? – Employees can go through rough patches. Whether it’s a struggle with completing a project or obvious signs that personal issues are impacting professional performance, being a leader that helps them out is incredibly important and will help them see that you’re serious about being compassionate.
These simple questions can help you get a clearer understanding of just how sympathetic you are to your team. Being a compassionate leader is important, and looking at yourself honestly is the first step towards becoming more compassionate with your employees.
