There are a lot of myths surrounding meditation, and for those beginning to practice soulful leadership, these myths can make meditation goals seem somewhat overwhelming. At Technalink, we know the many health and emotional benefits of mastering meditation, and to make these benefits more accessible to you, we’ve laid out 5 meditation myths and the facts that debunk them. These 5 common myths are:
1. You need to completely clear your mind before meditation
This myth is one of the biggest, and one of the seemingly most daunting for those who will benefit from soulful leadership and meditation the most. You don’t need to learn how to completely clear your mind to successfully meditate or gain the benefits that meditation offers, you simply need to give those intrusive thoughts less attention. By observing the thoughts you’re having naturally from the outside, rather than with copious stress from the inside, you’ll find that you’ve found the “gap” of being wrapped up in stressful thinking and clearing your mind completely. As you go on in your meditation, getting to this place becomes easier.
2. Meditation is difficult
Many believe that meditation is difficult, which is why it’s so widely practiced by the highest of spiritual leaders. There is no truth in this myth, and using a set of mala prayer beads in your beginner meditation sessions can show you just how simple relaxing yourself and repeating your mantra can be. As you continue with meditation, you’ll find that practice makes the effort more effortless.
3. Meditation takes up too much time
One big myth is that you need to set aside large chunks of time to meditate, but this couldn’t be further from the truth. You can meditate using only a couple minutes out of your day, and still reap all of the reward from your session. Small prayer bead sets of 18 or 27 beads are perfect for short sessions for beginners.
4. You have to master it before you see any reward
Many feel that meditation is a practice that needs to be undertaken for years before any real reward is seen, but the Mayo Clinic debunks this. Within just a couple weeks of beginning short meditation sessions, you will begin to experience the feelings of calm and clarity that meditation has to offer, as you reduce feelings of anxiety, stress, and depression.
5. Meditation requires specific beliefs
Soulful leadership doesn’t require any specific spiritual belief, and neither does meditation. Meditative practices are embraced by 2/3 of the world’s population, all of varying spiritualties, and there is no specific spiritual system required to reap the reward of meditation.
