Defining Characteristics Of A Great Leader

February 6, 2017 by Alka Dhillon Leave a Comment

Defining Characteristics Of A Great LeaderNo matter if you’re just entering your first management position or if you’ve been in the business leadership world for decades, one question is something that has to be considered by anyone – what make a leader great? Here at Technalink it’s one of the first things we believe any business leader should think about, and something that has many different answers.

For some, the definition of a good leader is simple – someone who helps increase company profits and ensures its success. But what if you go deeper than that? What helps a leader actually do those key things? There are a few characteristics that stand out here and are worth looking at. Whether it’s compassionate leadership or confidence in each step taken, a good leader has the following qualities in a big way.

  • Compassion – Compassionate leadership is a fundamental part of being a good leader. The reason? Showing employees that you care about them and their wellbeing drives up morale and helps get the best from every single team member. Compassionate leadership makes it easier to lead a company into the future.
  • Confidence – If you can’t take risks and make business moves with confidence, finding success will be difficult to do for anyone. A great leader has faith in their ability and also in the abilities of those working for them. Lacking confidence can cause you to second guess yourself, not take risks with major rewards, and more.
  • Humility – A great leader knows that they aren’t perfect. Being able to learn from your mistakes or even to take the time to keep learning on a daily basis in various ways will both be keys to better success. Admitting that you don’t know everything is a great way to ensure that you’re always willing to learn more.
  • Communicator – If you can’t listen and learn or directly communicate with your team in meaningful ways, your business will struggle. Your team should be able to give you information regularly and you should be able to take that information and use it. A great leader is one who understands the importance of communication.

These are just four elements that make up a great leader. Obvious things like having experience or knowledge in your field should go without saying, but these points above are often overlooked or ignored completely. Keep them in mind and strive to be the leader your company deserves, and you should be able to go onto great things.
