There are numerous ways to go about leading your employees towards success. But here at Technalink, we’ve found that being a compassionate leader that employees trust and can bond with is incredibly important. It can lead to better employee retention, better productivity, and much more. As such, it’s important to strive towards becoming a more compassionate business leader.
But how do you do this? There are numerous steps worth taking, but the first one is simply understanding some of the fundamentals to what it is that makes a compassionate leader. Here are 5 of the key elements that play a role in this.
- Communication – It all starts with communication. To be a compassionate leader, you have to know what’s going on in the lives of your employees to some degree. And to do that, you need a team who trusts that they can talk to you. Make sure that you have clear, open lines of communication and that employees don’t feel like they’ll be punished for talking to you about any issues that may be going on.
- Empathy – Being able to put yourself in the shoes of the other person is another major step in the path to compassionate leadership. It helps you see where the other person is coming from and identify their overall situation. This in turn can help you better approach any situation with more compassion.
- Honesty – Honesty matters in a big way. If you tell employees you’re going to do something, do it. If you give them guidelines and expectations on a project, they’ll be more willing to push towards those goals if they know that you’ve been upfront and honest with them about everything throughout the years.
- Responsibility – This goes hand in hand with honesty and is another major element in being a compassionate leader. Being able to take responsibility for your mistakes, and give credit to those who deserve it, is incredibly important. Don’t try to pass blame onto someone else – be an adult and admit when you’ve made mistakes.
- Interaction – Finally, interact constantly. Whether it’s making a trip through the office to talk to everyone and see how their day is going or diving into a project with them and working on completing it, make certain that you really interact with your employees. Don’t be a leader who hides behind their office door all day.
These are the 5 basic elements you’ll want to pay attention to when striving to become a compassionate leader. Doing so offers many rewards, and it’s simply not that difficult to do. Keep this in mind and you’ll be on your way to becoming the leader your employees deserve.
