When you ask people who quit a job why they’ve left their position, many of them will answer with something along the lines of ‘my boss’. The sad fact is that people don’t usually quit remote jobs– they quit people. In fact, there’s a good chance you yourself have left a job in the past because you didn’t like. At Technalink, we’ve found that those who focus on compassionate leadership are those who remember the simple fact that being the leader they always wanted is the key to becoming a leader that others will love.
Here are some of the key things to remember that will help you do just that, and gain the respect of your employees.
- Open Communication – Being able to talk to a business leader is important, and a key part of compassionate leadership as well. After all, if you can’t stay in touch with your employees it will be difficult to know what is going on in the business or in their lives – and how you can improve both.
- Understanding Leadership – We’re not talking about understanding what leadership is – we’re talking about being an understanding leader. Being able to empathize with your employees when problems arise in their life or when setbacks occur is important. How many times have you been sick or needed to leave work early because of a family emergency only to be reprimanded by your manager? Compassionate leadership means knowing when something is wrong, and being willing to accommodate it.
- Getting Active – We’ve all had a manager or supervisor who is barely present in the workplace, always hiding behind a closed door and then emerging only to take credit for the work of their team. If you want to be a great leader, you need to get active in the business and be willing to work alongside your team.
- Your Past Experiences – Think about your past employment experiences. What stood out as something a good leader did? What did a manager you didn’t care for do that lowered your opinion of them so much? Think back to your experiences and then apply those lessons to how you lead.
There is no question that sometimes business leaders have to be firm, but it’s also important that you take the time to develop yourself into the leader you would want to work for. Doing so can move your company into the future in a big way.
