As a business leader, you likely have a tremendous amount of information to manage in the workplace. From the next big deal you’re making to product releases to managing a conflict between two employees, you have plenty on your plate. But you’re also a person, and that means that you should have personal visions and goals outside of the workplace. At Technalink, we feel it’s important that you understand how to define and align your personal and professional vision for greater unity within yourself.
Doing so will help you by creating less stress, helping make your path clearer, and creating a deeper understanding of your purpose during each day. Luckily, it’s not as hard as it sounds. Here are a few tips to keep in mind that can help.
- Start by clearly defining what it is that you hope to achieve within your personal life and within your professional life. No matter what your ultimate goals may be, identify them.
- Now see how closely related they are. It often surprises people when they really look at what they want to learn just how similar their goals are. For example, your personal goal may be to earn enough to be comfortable for the rest of your life while your professional goal is to reach the point where you can sell your company. These are two goals that are obviously related to one another.
- Now identify what you’re sacrificing to achieve one goal or the other. Are you removing something that can help you reach a personal goal in favor of reaching the professional one? For instance, did you turn down a date because you wanted to put in extra hours on your big presentation? Know what you’re giving up to reach each goal.
- Next, decide on how those sacrifices are impacting your overall happiness. Did that extra hour of work on your project really make a big difference? If not, the date could have been a better choice that would have helped bring you more overall happiness.
- The key we’re going for here is somewhat elusive – you need to be able to look at each choice in your day and determine how it will impact your achievement of personal and professional goals. Then, you have to make the decision that is most important to you.
Why is it so vital to take this approach? Because when you aren’t fulfilled in your personal life, it can bleed over into stress at work. The same goes for work – business stress can create havoc in your personal life. Once you define and start aligning your personal and professional vision, you’ll have a better course charted for your life.
It’s something worth giving attention to.
