As leaders, we make decisions all day. However, sometimes the path forward isn’t clear. Often, I have to choose between two tough options or weigh a high opportunity cost. When I face a tough choice, I reach for my mala. With some simple mala practices, I can get out of the huddle and see things clearly. For decision-making, I use fluorite mala beads. Fluorite helps you sort through competing thoughts, reduce overwhelm, and see patterns more clearly.
Here are five mala meditations you can use to get clarity on your next tough decision:
1. Single-Question Japa Meditation
If you have a complex decision with multiple variables, the Single-Question Japa method will help you get clarity. Start by sitting up
1. Start by sitting upright. Slow your breath to a 4-second inhale and 6-second exhale.
2. Hold the guru bead (the larger anchor bead of your mala) between your thumb and first finger.
3. Concentrate and ask yourself one clear decision question.
4. Move through the mala beads, one bead per breath, silently repeating the question as you move down the string.
Once you complete all 108 beads, you’ll have more clarity. Repeating your question reduces cognitive fragmentation and helps your natural leadership insights emerge.
2. Use Discernment Mantra
If you have an emotionally tough decision, a discernment mantra will help you regulate your emotions before analyzing your options. You’ll have more objectivity. Start by choosing a mantra like:
● “Om Gum Ganapatayei Namaha” (Removes any obstacles or mental blocks)
● “The answer becomes clear as I become calm.”
● “My inner guidance is reliable and trustworthy.”
Once you have chosen your mantra, you will hold the guru bead. As you move through the mala beads, repeat your mantra. Continue until you feel calm, regulated, and ready to make a decision.
3. Binary Choice Assessment
If you’re facing a tough yes/no question, the binary choice assessment will help you weigh your options:
1. Assign each option to half the mala:
● Beads 1–54: Option A
● Beads 55–108: Option B
2. As you move each bead, visualize living inside that choice, and observe your physiological response:
● Breath expansion or restriction
● Jaw tension
● Chest openness
● Mental resistance
Your body naturally responds to the best choice. With this method, you leverage interoceptive awareness rather than pure analytical reasoning.
4. Future-Self Alignment Meditation
If you’re making a big decision with long-term implications, like a career choice, a partnership opportunity, or an investment play, future-self alignment will clarify the decision.
1. Start by holding the guru bead. Begin moving each bead with a deep breath.
2. With each bead, visualize your future self 3–5 years ahead
3. Then ask yourself: “Which decision did you choose, and why?”
4. Observe imagery that appears in your mind, how your body feels, and how you react emotionally.
When you visualize something clearly, you’re using the same part of your brain that handles long-term thinking and planning for the future. So you can mentally “try on” a decision before you make it. You get to see how it might play out, how it feels, and where it could lead, without having to live it in real time first.
5. Cognitive Declutter Bead Release
If you’re in a cycle of overthinking, cognitive decluttering will help you clear your mental congestion and get out of analysis paralysis.
1. Start by holding the guru bead and slowing your breath.
2. As you begin moving through the mala, assign each bead a single thought, worry, or mental tab that’s open in your mind.
3. With every bead, say “Release.”
4. As you do, picture yourself setting that thought aside outside your workspace, almost as if you were placing files in a box for later.
You’re not ignoring these concerns. You’re just moving them out of the way so you can think clearly. Move through one full round this way, and by the time you finish, your mental field will be clear. Then you can return to your original decision question.
With the right mala bead meditation, you can get clarity on any tough decision. I share more tips for decision-makers in The OM Factor. With the right tools and techniques, no matter the decision your face, the right path will always be clear.
