Technalink believes that one of the best tools for cultivating mindfulness in meditation is focusing on your breath. If you want to observe something that is happening in the present, your breath is always there, one of your best tools to quickly and easily deploy for the purposes of meditation and being in the present.
However, it’s possible to focus too much on this.
Too Much Focus Gets Lost In Thought
It’s easy to get lost in thought, and for some people, there is a risk of this happening if they devote too much attention to the particulars of breathing. For some, scrutinizing the breathing process means focusing on sensations in the lungs, the temperature of the air, and even the specific muscles being used. However, for others, drilling down to these minute details means thinking about these details, and thus getting lost in those thoughts.
For people who are prone to getting lost in thought over the specifics of breathing, try generalizing the state of mindfulness to just breathing itself. Be aware of inhaling and exhaling, but that’s it. This more holistic view can, for some, make it easier to stay engaged with being mindful of the present moment, rather than inadvertently creating a chain of thought to get lost in.
Remember, the goal of mindfulness is to be aware of and in the present. If you find your thoughts focused too much on the minute details of your breathing, try pulling back. On the other hand, that kind of focus may be exactly what’s needed for other people.
The goal with mindfulness is to always find the way that works for you to more easily attain this state. So while meditation is a good way to achieve this, you will likely need to find your own preferred method, such as using additional accessories like tiger’s eye prayer stones. These can be useful aids, providing additional tools or methods for focus.
