Bring Aroma Into Your Meditation

Bring Aroma Into Your MeditationEspecially for those new to meditation, creating an all-encompassing and soothing environment can help you to get to those meditative mental spaces much easier. When starting out in meditation, we at Technalink encourage our teams to look to their environment to limit distractions, encourage positive energies, and create a space that makes them want to live in the present. One way to do this is by using aroma to your advantage. Rudraksha mala prayer beads are one way to bring scent into meditation, but this isn’t the only way.

Diffusing or otherwise surrounding yourself with scent can bring peace and a meditative atmosphere no matter where you are. Some scents or aromas that are particularly beneficial to well-being and mindfulness include:

• Sandalwood – Sandalwood is a popular aroma choice for meditative spaces, and for good reason. The scent is earthy, creamy, comforting, and warm, while also encouraging energy and alertness at the same time. What does this mean for your meditation? You’ll be soothed and connected to the world around you, while you’re also alert to observe the thoughts and feelings that make their way through your body and mind.

• Clary sage – If you’re meditating for clarity, there’s no better aroma to surround yourself with than clary sage. It’s a fragrance with light earthy and floral notes, providing natural relaxation while also uplifting the mind and body. During times of stress or feeling down, it’s the type of aroma that brightens the mood with ease.

• Lavender – Lavender is, hands down, one of the most popular meditation aromas out there. For thousands of years this aroma has been used to encourage feelings of calm, alleviate anxiety, and promote quality rest. It also mixes well with other aromas to bring calm into uplifting moods or clarifying energies.

• Jasmine – Jasmine can be considered lavender’s opposite. They’re both aromas that have been used for thousands of years to invoke certain feelings, they’re both aromas that layer well with others, and they’re both basic aromas that have a place in anyone’s meditation toolkit. However, where they differ is just what feelings they bring to a meditation session. While lavender soothes and calms, jasmine is well known to energize and uplift. If you’re partaking in morning meditations and you want to start your day with a clear, calm, and energized mind, it’s jasmine you’ll want to reach for.

The aromas you choose are highly personal to your meditation goals and preferences. Having a selection of a few different aromas to choose from (and layer) ensures you always have the right aromatics to suit your mood.
