Aromatherapy is the use of aromatic oils to encourage different feelings, emotions, or energies. During meditation, the incorporation of aromatherapy works to create a more immersive experience that furthers your meditative goals in a new and all-encompassing way. At Technalink, we encourage our teams to experiment with their meditations in order to find different methods or strategies that keep their sessions fresh and effective. Aromatherapy is just one such strategy that can be beneficial for many.
You can use aromatherapy in your meditation in a few ways. If you’re meditating at the office or in a public space, a little dab of an aromatic oil with a carrier oil on the wrist or hand works well without being intrusive to others. If you’re meditating at home, you may opt for an aromatherapy diffuser to fill the room with your desired scent. Lastly, Rudraksha mala prayer beads are made of scented wood and bring aromatherapy into your meditation as you count your affirmations.
The aromas you choose will have different impacts on your emotional well-being, your energy, and the atmosphere of your meditation. It’s an easy way to bring or further meditation in your life, no matter what you wish to get out of a particular session. Some popular aromas to use when meditating are:
- Lavender – Lavender is an aroma that has been celebrated for thousands of years for its ability to soothe and calm. For those experiencing anxiety, the scent of lavender may help to ease and center your experience.
- Frankincense – Frankincense is a grounding aroma that works to help center the spiritual, mental, and physical selves. For meditation sessions focused on spiritual entrepreneurship and growth, frankincense can help to boost your affirmations.
- Bergamot – If lavender is soothing, and frankincense is grounding, there needs to be an aroma for upliftment and inspiration, and that’s where bergamot comes in. Fresh and zesty, the scent of natural bergamot works to encourage uplifting and energized emotions, helping to encourage focus and a positive mood.
If you’ve never incorporated aromas into your meditations before, you can always start slowly with a little bit of topical oil on the hand or wrist and see how it makes you feel during your session. You may find that the gentle scents bring an entirely new element to your meditation experience.
