One thing Technalink understands very well is that diversity is good, but it also means that a single, uniform standard will only sometimes apply well. This is especially true with something as personal as the discipline of meditation, where mindfulness is the goal, but everyone’s minds work differently.
Find Your Groove
This is why it’s important for people thinking of pursuing mindfulness through meditation to understand that this may also be a journey of self-discovery. People are different and so have different reactions, preferences, tendencies, and behaviors. Some people, for example, are neurotypical, while others are neurodivergent, which can play a huge role in what is required to meditate effectively.
All of which is to say that there is no “right way” to meditate, but that people must understand what stimulates them most effectively in meditation and then adapt that style to their needs.
Try All The Choices
While there is the tried and true method of traditional meditation in a class setting, or even on your own, with eyes closed, there’s much more than these two choices. Some require music, or some kind of aural environment, such as the wind and trees, to meditate. Others don’t like meditating with closed eyes and instead prefer to keep them open and look at something. Some don’t even meditate sitting; they lie down, stand, or walk.
Some will prefer a completely unguided experience, with nothing except their own thoughts. In contrast, others may prefer a more structured experience from an expert or guru acting as a guide or audio meditation tools. For the high-tech, there are now even virtual reality experiences that provide unique sights and sounds and audio guidance. You can even find certain accessories, like mala prayer beads, that can help keep track of recitations or mantras if you find it difficult to maintain mindfulness while simultaneously tracking your meditation activity.
The important thing is that finding a method of meditation that works for you means you’ll stick with it and get more and better results with time.
