Is Your Commute Affecting Your Health?

February 8, 2021 by Alka Dhillon Leave a Comment

Is Your Commute Affecting Your Health? According to data from the US Census Bureau over 150 million Americans commute every day by car, and another 7.6 million Americans commute via public transport. Whether you’re driving into the office each day, or you’re hopping on a train, bus, or other mode of public transport, we all have one thing in common – commutes can be, and often are, stressful or harmful to our well-being. At Technalink we encourage our teams to practice emotional mindfulness during their commute when possible in order to give them back control over any stresses their commute may bring. While we cannot help sometimes finding ourselves in stressful situations, we can control how we react to those situations and discover how our perceptions can form our reality.

With the stress of a daily commute, it can be difficult to turn those stresses off once we get to our destination. Without mindfulness, we can find these stresses following us around for the entire day. Stress causes a myriad of physical symptoms, so recognizing when you’re allowing stress to affect your health is important. A few things you can do to lower the stress you experience during your daily commute are:

1. Don’t let yourself get “hangry” – Skipping breakfast is never recommended, and hunger can make all of the effects of stress even worse. Low blood sugar is known to cause irritability and being stressed and irritable are two things that seem to go hand in hand. Make sure to have something healthy and nutritious before you leave for the day or pack a snack along with you to make your commute a little easier.

2. Intentionally let go – When you feel stress beginning to bubble up during your daily commute remind yourself to intentionally let go. Recognize the stress you’re feeling, let it know that you know it’s there, and then release it to change your perspective.

3. Tune in to The OM Factor – The OM Factor is now available in audiobook, and this is a tool you can use against stress during your commute or all throughout the day. In your vehicle you can simply stream The OM Factor through your car’s speakers, while you may wish to listen in your earbuds or headphones if you’re commuting on public transportation. The OM Factor provides you the tools to combat stress, bringing you back to your healthy center.
