All throughout our nation, in industries as glamorous as show business, and in the streets of Washington DC and other halls of power, women are making sure we are being heard, and not dismissed and ignored. The reason for that, is as true as it is sad; for many years, we were second class citizens, but this is something that no longer stands in the 21st century, and Technalink is proud to support this, and other women in business who are fighting for their rights here and in other parts of the world.
The Genie Is Out Of The Bottle
It feels like we are on the cusp of another great movement in social justice, similar to the one we saw for civil rights in the 1960s. Only this time, it is women of all creeds and colors that are fighting. From the #metoo movement that has been taken up even by Hollywood to the women’s marches around the country in major cities, women are refusing to be silent. And it is important that we be vocal. It is important that women in business realize that it wasn’t so very long ago that we couldn’t even run our own business, let alone vote to determine who would lead our city, state or country.
Our Responsibility To The Future
As women in business, we have an unprecedented opportunity. We can shape, effect and influence. We can do this not just with the economic power we wield as a business, especially if we are very successful, we can do this through the example we set.
We have an opportunity to support other women, precisely because we have the power to make decisions within our own business. In the past, a woman that was harassed or abused at work had very little recourse. The legal system often made it difficult for women to get the justice they deserved because the nature of the evidence that was required to formally prosecute a case.
Today, we can do better. Times have changed, perceptions have changed, and women in business now have the power to simply believe someone else when they have a crisis or problem. As decision makers within our own companies, we don’t have to wait for the justice system to give a woman fair treatment. If we see poor treatment for ourselves, with our own eyes, in our own company, we’re now in a position to do something about it. And for the sake of every little girl that is going to grow up to be a woman in tomorrow’s workforce, we should.
