Running a business involves wearing a lot of hats over the course of the day. To your employees, you wear the “boss” hat, providing guidance and direction. To some, you wear the “mentor” hat, teaching them in short, com-pact form, the lessons you had to learn the hard way, over a much longer period of time. And in other cases, you may have to wear the “negotiator” hat, and deal with new customers or clients, to make new deals and grow your business.
But somewhere in all of this, you may be wanting to wear a new hat, a more mindful hat that addresses the spiritual needs of yourself and your company. If you want to start wearing the “meditation” hat at work, you may be worried about integrating this practice into an already busy day. But Technalink can not only show you how to bring this into your business, it can show you how it helps.
Try Some Beads
Meditation beads can be a simple, cost-effective tool to help bring meditation into your place of work. They don’t require any special training or even religious/faith orientation, they are simply a tool that anyone can use to aid in meditation and mindfulness exercises, even in the workplace. You use them to keep count of the recitation of your mantra. Although there are 108 beads in total, you don’t have to recite a mantra 108 times. 7, 21 or other numbers you feel comfortable with are fine too.
The important thing is that the meditation beads are present just to help you keep count, and put a limit on how long you plan to meditate. What is of greater value is that you get a quality period of meditation and that it creates a sense of mindfulness that can help you get through your day.
Meditation When You Need It
If you’ve decided to bring meditation into your workplace, do not treat it exactly like the rest of your work. Don’t just schedule meditation at lunchtime and only lunchtime, for example. Meditation doesn’t have to run on a fixed structure, and, in fact, that may not be the most efficient use of it. If you find you benefit from the quiet of lunch and you enjoy the peace it brings you during this time, then by all means, include it.
However, there may be times during the day when you are feeling panicked, uncertain, or even just overwhelmed by how much there is to do. It is during these times when your mind is abuzz and indecisiveness seems to have taken over, that meditation and the use of meditation beads are truly at its most useful. Remember, the goal of meditation is to bring clarity, focus, and mindfulness. That may not always be something that you need every day, at the same time.
Try to be flexible about finding time during the day to meditate. Be especially active about meditation when you find that your thoughts are out of order, or that you’re not feeling yourself. At these times, meditation and the mindfulness it brings can be very helpful.
