Over the years, more and more companies and individuals have experienced firsthand just how profound of an impact meditation can have on their quality of life. - Lower chance of conflicts in the workplace
- Improved morale
- Better communication
- Better productivity
In short, mindful meditation is a key part of truly helping your employees and your business succeed. But one thing that holds some back is an unease about how to proceed. Is it as simple as passing out some meditation beads and sitting silently for fifteen minutes? Before you start worrying about how to bring mindful meditation into the workplace, you need to master the basics of the art. Here’s a rundown of what you need to know.
- Start by finding a quiet place with little or no distraction. Lighting doesn’t matter all that much, and is more of a question of personal preference.
- Start small. While you can certainly work up to sessions as long as an hour, starting with five or ten-minute sessions is much better.
- Sit in a comfortable position that is stable. This can be a chair or cushion on the floor if you prefer. The key is to be sure that you’re comfortable. Straighten the body but don’t stiffen it too much.
- Feel your breath. Follow its passage as it moves in and out of the body. Here, you’re focusing on the physical sensation of breathing. Find a good focal point there and try to keep your mind on it. At this point, you can start using meditation beads to help ground and center your mind.
- Your mind may begin to wander. That’s normal. The key isn’t to ‘block out’ thoughts. Instead, just gently return your focus to your breathing when you notice that your mind has wandered away from it. This could be seconds or minutes. Again, meditation beads can help here.
- If your mind wanders regularly, don’t react – just observe and make note of it. Then, gradually ease your focus back to your breathing. If you make physical adjustments, do so with intent – don’t just react to an itch immediately. Provide space between the need to scratch and the action, for example.
- When your time is up, raise your gaze and open your eyes. You’ll likely feel greatly refreshed. Take note of thoughts and feelings and decide how you want to continue your day.
That’s the entire process of mindful meditation in a nutshell. If you’ll practice it a few times on your own, you’ll be able to master the art of meditation and start introducing your employees to it. Doing so could change the very face of your company.
