While women in the workplace have come a long way in recent decades, and continue to soar to new heights, this doesn’t mean that there are no obstacles specific to today’s women in business. At Technalink, we believe that any challenge can be overcome, and this includes those facing today’s women in business, as long as you have the right tools to use to push ahead. While overcoming today’s business challenges isn’t easy for professional women, it is possible, and it will leave you a smarter, savvier, and stronger professional in the process.
One of the biggest and most common challenges facing many women in business today is the art of juggling a family and juggling a professional life at the same time. Spouses, households, and children create a sizable demand on your energy, which also needs to be shared professionally, and women feel more pressure to be able to seamlessly juggle these things than men. It seems as though a professional woman in business will be frowned upon for spending too much time at the office and not enough time at home, while a man is more likely to be applauded for his efforts to provide. The best way to overcome this challenge is to develop a work/home life balance strategy that gives you a set time to leave the office at the office, and dedicate your time to your personal life. While difficult, using discipline in creating this work balance will make managing both much easier.
Gender discrimination is also a challenge that women in business face often today, and while it may not be as out in the open as it was decades ago, that certainly doesn’t mean it no longer exists. Women in STEM careers especially find that they face challenges their peers do not, and when their male colleagues are allowed to make mistakes, they need to be seen as perfect in order to be held at a similar value. One way to overcome this challenge is to seek out women-owned businesses that embrace professional women in STEM professions, allowing you a way to professionally flourish with like-minded individuals.
Women tend to have several natural abilities and strengths that make them naturally exceed in business, like ease in networking, natural compassion, multi-tasking skills, and talent in negotiation. Using these and other natural skills, today’s women in business can continue to overcome these challenges and push the envelope for professional equality even further.
