When most people think about what drives them, things like their inspiration or their dreams and ambitions often come up. But there is something else that can motivate – and also create major obstacles. That something is fear, and here at Technalink we believe that being able to identify and admit fear is the key to conquering it.
This is even more important for women in business leadership roles when you consider the unique challenges and fears that they may face. But the first step is simply understanding fear and its role in the business world.
Fear can do a lot. Fear of being broke, for example, can help motivate people to work. Fear of failure on the other hand could hold people back from taking that big first step down a path that can ultimately reward them. The fear of the unknown and what it may bring is something that is always considered by women in business and their male counterparts – after all, there are plenty of things that can go wrong.
But how do you conquer fear and overcome it? There are a few steps that we’ve found that can be instrumental in doing just that. Here are some tips to keep in mind.
- Identify Your Fears – We mean your real fears, the root of the problem that is stopping you from making moves in the direction you want to go in. You may just be telling yourself that you’re afraid of starting a new project because you don’t want it to fail, but are you really afraid that a specific investor won’t be on board or that a component of the project is riskier than the rest? Identify the real fear first.
- Assess Honestly – Once you have the real, underlying, primary fear out in the open it’s time to assess it carefully and with as much honesty as possible. The idea here is simple – finding out if it’s a valid fear or one that is likely overblown by your own mind. If there are some valid concerns, you’ll be able to identify how to reduce their risk and improve your results accordingly. Otherwise, you’ll likely realize that the fears holding you back aren’t grounded.
- Look To The Past – Women in business leadership roles and also their male counterparts should always think about their past successes. Look at what led you to where you are, identify ways you succeed and overcome obstacles, and so on. When you remember your inner strength, you’ll be better able to stay motivated to thrive.
- Plan Properly – Finally, plan out your path carefully using the assessments you’ve made. When you know what you’re really afraid of and how to overcome it, planning a way to do so is easier than you might realize.
These simple tips can help you identify fear and overcome it, becoming a better business leader in the process and guiding your company towards greater things.
