One of the single most important things for any business leader to have is respect. If your employees don’t respect you, you’ll struggle to convince them to work in the most effective manner possible. As a result, it can be a challenge to realize the true potential of your business.
At Technalink, we’ve found several key tips that can help make it easier for you to lead your team to respect you more. Doing so can be tremendously rewarding, and it’s well worth taking the time to do. Here are some of the main things to keep in mind as you’re trying to build up respect from your team.
- First of all, understand that there is a clear and very large difference between respect and fear. Don’t become the leader that everyone is afraid of, or that they obey because they fear repercussions. You want to be a leader that your team looks up to and respects for their talent, compassion, and ability to truly be a leader. Learn the difference between fear and respect, and never forget it.
- Go beyond leading and actually work on helping your team. Become their guide – help them with work related challenges, talk to them if it appears that personal problems are bothering them, and more. If you’ll show interest and compassion in your team members’ problems, they’ll respect you much more for it.
- Give your team the credit that they deserve. The fastest way to gain respect is to lead with humility and humbleness. Don’t hog the credit when something goes right – give it to those who really contributed. They’ll appreciate it, and look up to you more.
- Finally, communicate and do so effectively. Listen to your team and then go further – actually act on their opinions, ideas, and comments. When your employees feel that you actually value their input, they begin to respect you more and identify more completely with you.
If you’re serious about taking your company to the next level, gaining the respect of your team is key. Keep the tips above in mind and you should have better success at doing just that.
