Often, this isn’t because of a lack of desire but rather simply because business leaders don’t fully understand just how to build better lines of communication within the business.
Luckily, it’s much easier than many realize. A few simple steps can lay the foundation for better dialogue between you and your employees, and it’s well worth doing. Here are some of the key elements that can help you build better communication in the workplace.
- Start off by showing that you’re open and there for your employees. Don’t stay in your office – remain a presence throughout the day. Interact with your team and get to know them. There’s a big difference between a boss that employees respect and feel comfortable with and one that they barely see.
- Set up different methods for them to talk to you. Announcing an open door policy to your office is great, but what about things like surveys, monthly meetings, and more? Every additional way that you let your team communicate with you means an improved chance of hearing from them.
- Ensure that they understand you aren’t going to punish them for their opinions. Many times, employees don’t talk to their boss about issues because they fear repercussions.
- Also be sure that you act on your information. If employees are talking regularly about a problem, try to fix it. If they have an idea that could enhance your business, take it and run with it – giving them credit, of course. When your team feels that you actually listen to what they have to say, it can lead to some big changes.
Paying attention and listening to your employees is important. While plenty of leaders try to lead by talking to their employees, the best ones will create a dialogue between them that can give them information that will help lead to much better things for the company.
