Brief Guide to Mala Prayer Beads

May 16, 2022 by Alka Dhillon Leave a Comment

Brief Guide to Mala Prayer BeadsMala prayer beads are often used during prayer and meditation. They are similar to a rosary, but each bead has a mantra rather than a prayer. The Mala helps you remain focused during your meditation.

Mala beads have been used over the centuries as a mindfulness aid without claiming any religious affiliation. Here is a brief guide to Mala prayer beads, including how to use them and their meaning.

How Do You Use Mala Beads?

When using Mala beads for meditation, they are effective for breath control and mantra repetition. Paying attention to your breathing is a part of meditation. To use your beads to control your breath, hold them in one hand and let the beads drape over your fingers, so you can move the beads around easily in your hand.

You will then place two fingers around one of the beads next to the guru bead. People often use their thumb and middle finger. Now, complete one full breath as you inhale and exhale. Your fingers can then move to the next bead, breathing in and out with each.

Repeating a Mantra

Mantras are phrases or words you can use during meditation and mindfulness to help better focus your awareness. A mantra can be reassuring and calming. It is repeated during meditation. The mantra is said in a clear and loud voice or can be mentally repeated if you prefer.

Choosing Your Mala Beads

Mala beads come in many different colors and styles. The beads are often made of seeds, precious and semiprecious stones, wood, or similar materials. You should choose beads that feel right to you. Remember, there is no wrong choice. Just find the Mala beads that speak to you and feel right in your hands.

A traditional Mala bead necklace will have 108 beads. This is representative of a sacred number often used in Hinduism and Buddhism. However, if this is too many beads, you can choose shorter strands to help you keep better track of your repetitions.

Mala beads are a good way to increase concentration, improve focus, and work well for you if you practice mindfulness and meditation. When choosing your beads, make sure to choose those that feel right for you, and you can then experience the power behind your meditation time.
