Mala beads are used by yogis and Buddhist monks when reciting their prayers or mantras. The 108 beads of a mala help achieve concentration. There are different types of beads, such as wood and crystals, and they each have different purposes:
• Hand of Fatima or Hamsa hand is associated with protection from evil and misfortune.
• Owl Tiger Eye and Lemon Topaz bring wisdom and protection. They help develop your perception and intuition.
• Clear quartz helps clear the mind, body, and spirit so you can achieve your highest potential.
• Rose quartz is symbolic of unconditional love and peace.
• Amethyst helps maintain balance, counteract negative emotions, and keep you motivated.
How To Use A Mala
The cord connecting each mala bead symbolizes the thread of life. Mala beads are central to meditation and in training the spiritual self. They have numerous uses for the spirit. One of their main uses is as a guide for repetition while meditating. People who use malas recite their mantras while counting the beads. You can use your mala either while doing formal meditation or while on a long commute. The method is simple:
1. Hold your mala gently in your left hand using your index or middle finger and your thumb.
2. Take a few breaths and begin chanting your mantra.
3. Count each bead after the guru bead (the largest bead) as you recite your mantra. Each bead should represent one completed recitation of your mantra.
4. Continue until you have counted all 108 beads.
5. If you wish to continue, start counting in reverse. Do not cross the guru bead.
Using them may be simple, but mala beads will help you maintain your concentration as you recite and internalize your mantra.
