The Power Of Scent In Meditation

July 7, 2017 by Alka Dhillon Leave a Comment

The Power Of Scent In Meditation The scent is a huge part of our conscious and subconscious mind, and it’s one that we often don’t realize the importance of right away. Have you ever caught wind of a scent in the air and been transported back to a particular place, time, or feeling? The scent is the strongest sense tied to memory, and its impact, while not often realized, is dramatically felt. The power of scent can also be harnessed in your meditation, and we at Technalink really find the extra element it adds to meditation sessions particularly powerful.

Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania have been studying the effect of scent on a person’s mind-body well-being. Christian Kohler, clinical director of neuropsychiatry at the University has said the study “Theoretically, practicing one’s sense of smell could be associated with better neurological well-being, but this has not been proven.” As research continues, more will be learned about the scientific effect of scent on the mind and body, but until then its effects on a person’s meditation will simply be experienced based.

At Technalink, we encourage teams to use Rudraksha seed mala prayer beads in scented woods to experience the effects of scent in meditation, just like those found in the OM Factor Rx Kit. These textured mala prayer beads provide a unique touch sensation when held in the hand and used to practice affirmations during a meditation session, as they also provide a unique soothing scent which sets your mind at ease. For those just beginning in meditation, using scent in your sessions can help to trigger your mind to go to a place of meditation as you’re furthering your experience in the practice, and in the form of mala prayer beads, can also give you a trusted guide in leading your sessions successfully.

The power of scent in mediation should never be understated and can be invoked using other methods than simply scented Rudraksha mala prayer beads. Oils and scents like peppermint or lavender can be used to soothe, energize, or clarify the mind, and these scents can be experimented with to determine which works best for you.
