Why Trying To Control Your Employees Is The Wrong Path

Why Trying To Control Your Employees Is The Wrong PathBusiness leaders today have to deal with a lot of different things in order to keep their business moving towards success. However, it’s easy to take some wrong steps without even realizing that you’ve done so. As a result, it is incredibly important to pay attention to each aspect of how you lead your team in the business world. Here at Technalink, one thing that we have seen multiple times is an incorrect approach to guiding employees.

In particular, many business leaders choose to lead by trying to control employees rather than through positive steps. These controlling efforts include things like strict disciplinary guidelines, overly extreme punishments, trying to dictate every aspect of the business, threatening employees, and more.

That’s not a way to run a business. Instead, you should be focusing on trying to lead by example. Here are some reason that help explain why trying to control your employees isn’t good for you, them, or your company.

  • For starters, it can increase employee turnover rates dramatically. Unhappy employees often leave a business, and when you consider that hiring and losing employees can cost thousands it becomes clear that making sure your team is happy is a vital part of the process of running a business.
  • You will likely reduce productivity dramatically. Employees who don’t’ have high morale won’t work as hard or as effectively for your business. As a result, you can expect a reduced amount of work to be done thanks to your controlling ways.
  • You might also impact your business relationships in a negative way. Word travels fast, and a potential business partner may be hesitant to work with you if you have a reputation for being domineering and controlling.
  • You also run the risk of missing out on potential ideas and opportunities. When your team feels like they’re just pawns you’re pushing around, they aren’t as likely to bring their own ideas forwards – ideas that could elevate your company to something special.

In short, controlling your employees isn’t the right idea as a business leader. Instead, you should be looking for ways that you can work as a team. Lead your employees by guiding them, encouraging communication, and being understanding when certain circumstances arise. This way you’ll be able to become the kind of leader that they respect and look up to – not one that they fear or hate. It’s a simpler way of running a business, and a more effective one.
