Technalink has always been supportive of people who decide it’s time to learn to meditate. There are many benefits to be had from cultivating this as a new, regular habit, including better stress and anxiety management. One of the most important first steps is taking the proper approach to breathing, and “box breathing” is one of the simplest and easiest breathing techniques to learn.
Breathe In Equal Time
“Box breathing” gets its name because you are breathing almost as if you are covering the sides of a square, or box. The technique of box breathing involves breathing at a regular, fixed rhythm, typically with a slow count of 4 or 5, and intervals in between. In other words, one slow count is to breathe in, the next count is to hold your breath, the count after that is to breathe out, and a final count is to hold that exhalation before breathing in again. This simple, regular count covers each “side” of a box, hence the term “box breathing.”
Box breathing is one of the first, simplest, and easiest introductions to breathing as a method of control and mindfulness, because it’s not too demanding, meaning most people can easily do it correctly. More importantly, however, it is a fast way to focus on the present, since breathing at a regular rhythm while counting easily engages the mind in present activities and sensations, which is the goal of mindfulness.
Building Your Regimen
Box breathing can be a good introduction to integrating meditation into your lifestyle. It’s just a matter of finding the kind of meditation that works best for you. We are all unique and will have our own preferences and styles. This carries over into the meditation and breathing techniques that best serve our needs, and sometimes even the meditation accessories we may need, like tiger’s eye prayer stones. All of these choices help us to learn how to meditate.
