Technalink obviously believes that technology can be a positive force in contributing to well-being. However, that doesn’t mean we believe there are no negatives. To the contrary, in order to understand how beneficial something can be, one also needs to understand the ways it can be harmful. This is especially true with digital media.
It’s Everywhere
For most people, modern life also means heavy integration with digital media, particularly social media. Unfortunately, for all the entertainment and even valuable communication that social media can provide, it is also capable of causing great distraction, distress, and in the most extreme cases, even trauma and lingering post-traumatic stress disorder.
This is why, for the sake of your well-being, it’s important to occasionally step back and assess what kind of relationship you have with your digital media in general and social media in particular. Is it something that you occasionally consult as a distraction to while away a few minutes, or is it something that keeps you up long into the night as you scroll through new messages and contribute to threads, posts, and other forms of engagement?
Meditation Can Make A Difference
If you find that social media in particular is causing you to lose yourself in feelings of anxiety and spirals of negative thinking, it may be time to consider reassessing your digital media relationship. After all, social media is about data from the Internet; it does not reflect who you are, where you are, and what is currently happening around you.
Meditation and cultivating a sense of mindfulness are good ways to realign your relationship with social media. Often, the information we take in from social media can have lingering effects on us, but meditation can be a good “cleansing ritual” against this.
Of course, meditation is a personal experience, so you should find the right technique and the right tools for you, such as mala prayer beads. These can be useful in bolstering your well-being.
