Technalink has always believed that maintaining mindfulness can be beneficial for both personal and professional life. However, it can be hard to remember to strive for this state during a busy day. Fortunately, there’s more than one way to achieve mindfulness besides conventional meditation. Here are four tips for becoming more mindful during your day.
Food Mindfulness
Perhaps one of the easiest ways to achieve mindfulness is during a snack or a meal. Instead of concentrating on the present, with no stimulation, use food as your focus. Take a snack, or meal item, such as a raisin or anything else you want to eat, and approach the experience as if you are encountering a new food for the first time. Pay attention to:
- Look
- Feel
- Smell
- Taste
Concentrate on all the food sensations. This will help you focus on the present and be mindful.
Body Scan
This can be done just about anywhere, for any length of time, whether it’s a few seconds, minutes, or even hours. A body scan is where the participant does an “assessment” of the body. How does the body feel right now? Are there aches and pains? Ease or difficulty in breathing? As with food, focusing on the body brings you into the present, concentrating on what is happening now, not in the past or the future, which is what mindfulness is all about.
Five Senses Exercise
This exercise is about putting your focus on each sense, one at a time. Start big, and reduce the number of things you focus on, beginning with:
- 5 things you see
- 4 things you feel
- 3 things you hear
- 2 things you smell
- 1 thing you taste
And all of this grounds you in the present, helping you to stay mindful.
Drive With Mindfulness
This is a great way to stay mindful and increase your safety. Driving is all about situational awareness, so instead of daydreaming as you drive to your next destination, put your full focus on the driving experience. Concentrate on the sights around you, what other vehicles are doing, and even your own emotional reactions to the things you see around you.
Finally, if you want more guidance on doing this at work, Alka Dhillon can help. Her book The Om Factor: A Women’s Spiritual Guide To Leadership is available in print, digital, and audiobook formats and shows you how mindfulness can be useful in your business.
