How to Use and Clean Mala Prayer Beads

November 11, 2022 by Alka Dhillon Leave a Comment

How to Use and Clean Mala Prayer BeadsMala prayer beads are used for spiritual and mindfulness practices. They are popular for meditation and offer a deep connection to mental grounding as you open your mind spiritually. Mala Beads are so much more than just jewelry. They are powerful and culturally rich, so we will show you how to use and cleanse your Mala prayer beads.

How to Choose Your Mala

Mala represents something different to each person. While the mala Beads can be a tool used during meditation, they can also manifest what you are feeling. When choosing your beads, find what you are drawn to.

Beads also carry their own intentions, so you need to decide what your intentions are. Are you looking for more strength? Or do you want to cultivate more love in your life?

These questions can help you decide which Mala Beads to purchase.

How to Use Mala Prayer Beads

When using your Mala prayer beads, you’ll want to recite a mantra to help activate your beads and seal in the energy. “Om Hrim Namah Shivaya Om.” Speak this three times and then sit for 5 minutes to feel the energetic bond. Once the beads have been activated, you will then cleanse them.

Hold your beads in one hand and let them drape across your fingers, so they can easily move. Now complete one full breath with a deep inhale and then exhale. Move your fingers to the next bead, and continue your breaths for each. Finish at the guru bead, and this completes 108 breaths.

How to Clean Mala Beads

Once your beads have been activated, you will want to cleanse them from time to time. They store and absorb energy, so you want to avoid sharing your Mala Beads with others, so you can avoid transferring any of your energy.

To cleanse your beads, place them in moonlight or sunlight. You can burn sage over the top of your beads. You can also place them in a Tibetan singing bowl, tap the sides to create a sound, or ring the edges. You can also place your beads in warm water and soak them overnight. Let them fully dry, and then brush them with sandalwood oil or coconut oil to make the beads stronger and ensure they don’t dry out.

If your Mala Beads are broken, it is your opportunity to reflect and decide if you have the same intentions as before. You can then choose a new set of beads to reflect your current feelings and intention to continue bringing mindfulness into your life.
