There’s More Than One Way To Meditate

December 4, 2020 by Alka Dhillon Leave a Comment

There’s More Than One Way To MeditateSpirituality in business can sometimes feel like two concepts in diametric opposition, but Technalink believes they can coexist. Alka Dhillon has made a career of integrating spiritual aspects of life with business practices. One of the most important is the value of meditation. However, for those that are unfamiliar, meditation can take many forms.

Concentration Meditation

While the goal of meditation is relaxation and a sharpening of the mind, this is achieved in many different ways. Focused meditation is about honing the mind to remain on a specific point. This may be something you look at, or it may be a meditation tool, such as mala prayer beads.

Regardless of the strategy used, the overall goal is the same. It seems easy to concentrate on something, but in the modern world of multi-tasking, staying focused on one fixed idea or concept can be challenging for an extended period. Focused meditation addresses this with a concerted effort to remain fixed in thought and concentration.

Mindfulness Meditation

Mindfulness can, in one sense, be thought of as “awareness.” Awareness means understanding and paying attention to what is happening, whether that is an event, an idea, or in this case, meditation. Mindfulness meditation is the opposite of concentration meditation. Rather than trying to create discipline about staying fixed on a single meditative point, the goal is to pay attention to whatever comes to mind.

In other words, mindfulness meditation is about letting the mind wander but then diverting energy, attention, and focus on whatever it is that the mind has wandered to. This presents its own sets of challenges, keeping focus active while at the same time allowing thoughts to go where they may.

However, both of these activities can be great ways to maintain mindfulness and can be practiced for both long and short periods, depending on the needs and schedule you have for a given day.
