When you begin taking steps to improve your company, one of the key things to consider is the workplace environment that you and your team are operating in. This can have a tremendous influence on your attitudes and on the end results of any project, and it’s vital that you fill your workplace with positive energy.
Positivity in the workplace can help by boosting morale, improving employee retention, and more. It’s a key step in improving the way your team feels and their performance, but at Technalink we’ve found that many leaders don’t fully understand how to increase the level of positivity within their workplace. Here are 5 steps that can help.
- Open Communications – Having an open communication line is important for a better working environment. Start by making it clear that employees can come to you with questions, concerns, or issues without fearing retaliation. Go further by adding an anonymous suggestion box, and actually listen to your team and try to make changes based on their opinions. It can show them you care, and improve the vibe in your workplace.
- Praise Where It’s Due – Giving employees the praise and recognition that they deserve is important. A simple ‘good job’ is fine, but if someone goes above and beyond it’s worth having a system in place that will let them feel like you really recognize what they are doing for your company – and that you appreciate it.
- Compassion When It’s Needed – Your company likely has things like attendance policies and procedures for missing time at work. But there are circumstances that should take priority over this. A death in the family, a sick child, or similar issues shouldn’t be punished at work. Showing compassion will help your team feel better about where they work and who they work for.
- Approachability – Are you approachable? Does your team respect you or simply fear you? Do you notice that you’re not really getting direct interaction from your team? You may need to rethink your attitude and your image – being unapproachable can negatively impact the overall feeling that employees have at their job.
- Incentives – Offering your team various morale boosting incentives is well worth doing. It could be monthly raffles, in-office parties, or anything else you can think of. But along with good pay and employee benefits, giving them additional incentives can help motivate them to greater things.
If you can keep these five steps in mind you’ll be on your way to creating a more positive workplace and ensuring that your team is happier with their job and that they turn in improved performance every day.
